Safety First
Every crewmember of the SSV TOLE MOUR is a trained professional. The Captain, mates and deck crew all possess the necessary certifications required by the US Coast Guard. In addition, all instructors have four-year science degrees. Crewmembers are certified in at least First Aid, CPR and Lifesaving. Before every season the professional crew trains to be prepared for any emergency situation. During these training periods we frequently coordinate with Baywatch and the Coast Guard, as in these photographs. Although the SSV TOLE MOUR captures the look and feel of an earlier time, she is a thoroughly modern vessel: a steel ship of United States registry, inspected and certified as a Sailing School Vessel by the U.S. Coast Guard. As such, she is required to meet different safety standards from passenger vessels on comparable routes. The SSV TOLE MOUR meets or exceeds all applicable safety standards for ocean service, with the latest in electronic navigation and communication equipment, five life rafts, and a rescue boat. In the event of a Man Overboard, Fire, or Call to Boat Stations emergency, alarms will sound throughout the ship, and chaperones and students must immediately report to the stern of the ship. The entire crew will undergo a safety orientation at the beginning of each trip in which emergency duties are clearly defined. Chaperones and students are responsible for knowing their assigned role and muster area. There will be an emergency drill during your expedition.
